Persian carpets are handwoven pile rugs traditionally made in Iran. With a history stretching back thousands of years, they are regarded as some of the world’s most beautiful and durable handmade rugs.
For generations, Persian carpet weaving has been an essential part of everyday life and cultural tradition throughout Iran. Each region has developed its own distinctive weaving techniques, materials, colors, and designs, giving Persian carpets a remarkable diversity of styles and character.
Qum lies on the edge of the vast deserts of central Iran. The region is blessed with water particularly well suited to washing and finishing silk carpets, helping create the beautiful luster and refined appearance for which Qum silk carpets are known.
Although Qum is a relatively young carpet-producing center, with its weaving tradition developing mainly over the past century or so, the quality of its water and the skill of its weavers helped the city develop rapidly into one of Iran’s renowned centers of silk carpet production.
Silk carpets have long been treasured by royalty, aristocrats, and wealthy merchants. Their fine craftsmanship, intricate designs, and luminous beauty have made them enduring symbols of elegance and luxury.
Tabriz is a historic city in northwestern Iran and one of the country’s major commercial centers. Its long history as a center of trade is even mentioned in Marco Polo’s famous travel account, *The Travels of Marco Polo*.
With cold winters and heavy snowfall, Tabriz has developed a strong tradition of weaving carpets from fine wool. Tabriz carpets are particularly known for their rich and varied color palettes, often using more colors than carpets from other regions.
This remarkable use of color not only gives the carpets a vibrant and sophisticated appearance, but has also contributed to the development of distinctive pictorial carpets, known as “picture carpets.”

Naein is located almost in the center of Iran, surrounded by vast desert. Once a small oasis town in this harsh environment, Nain was known for producing fine wool textiles. As the textile market declined, local artisans turned to carpet weaving, giving rise to the Naein carpet tradition.
Naein carpets are known for their restrained and elegant color palettes. Soft beige tones, reminiscent of the dry desert landscape, are complemented by green representing trees, blue symbolizing water, and touches of red reflecting the vitality of life.
Although the range of colors is relatively limited, the subtle and refined tones make Nain carpets easy to incorporate into a wide variety of interior styles.
Kashan is one of the oldest and most renowned centers of Persian carpet weaving, known for producing fine, high-quality carpets. Because the region’s harsh climate was not well suited to agriculture, traditional crafts such as pottery and tile making developed there from an early period.
Kashan also benefited from its strategic location as an important center of trade. Along with its carpets, the city became known in the West for producing luxurious velvet and damask textiles.
After the decline of the carpet industry under Afghan rule in the 18th century, carpet weaving was revived toward the end of the 19th century. With a long tradition of silk production and sericulture, Kashan became particularly known for its finely woven, high-quality silk carpets.
